Supervision Philosophy

Supervision Philosophy

Ph.D. training in our group requires students with highly motivated self-learning and the ability to cross-discipline to new areas. Research is exploring new territory and constantly asking hard scientific questions.

Anyone who hesitates to learn new knowledge (particularly hardcore physics and maths) will have difficulty studying and researching in our group. Every member will do independent research, and each member will be responsible for progress, planning, and inquiring.

Research is a route towards new and novel knowledge, not just learning something that already exists. Anyone who joins the group is expected to be an independent researcher facing state-of-the-art topics and responsible for the research. A risk-taking mindset is a MUST in our group. And failure is common and a must towards very occasional success. Finding new science is exploring the unknown; it will be a disappointment for Dr. Tang if the final result exactly follows the original idea and initial plan. As an independent researcher, the researcher (student) is responsible for the project and needs to make intelligent input in designing/exploring any research project. Be prepared to point out the supervisor’s errors and mistakes and direct the project correctly.

After Ph.D. training, the student should be experienced with independent critical thinking, finding, and extracting scientific questions from real-world problems.
